Information and Global Comparison

The problem's urgency and the UK's standing in the world are both highlighted by the latest data. According to The Telegraph (2023), UK law enforcement received over 316,900 reports of internet child sexual abuse in 2023 alone. This was the greatest number in Europe and a 225% increase from the year before. This implies that although there are more hazards online, public awareness and reporting systems might be getting better.

Although the UK has a higher reported abuse rate than other countries, this may not be due to greater prevalence alone. A research conducted in Germany, for example, revealed that 7.6% of adults had been sexually molested as children and 6.7% of adults had been physically abused (Matthes et al., 2016). However, according to statistics from the UK, around one out of five adults was abused before the age of sixteen (NSPCC, 2022). While disparities in research methodologies, legal definitions, and reporting cultures complicate comparisons, they also highlight the value of consistent data collecting and global collaboration.
